Foram analisadas neste trabalho as áreas desmatadas no Bioma Amazônia, bem como suas causas, ocorridas nos Estados da Amazônia Legal até o período de 2009. Para o cálculo de desmatamento na Amazônia Legal, foram utilizadas duas metodologias. A primeira foi realizada a partir da premissa referida em Brasil (2008), que considera o desmatamento no Bioma Amazônia em torno de 300 mil km2 até aproximadamente o ano de 1977. O segundo cálculo foi realizado durante o período de 1978-1988 até 2009, para o qual foi utilizada a metodologia do sistema PRODES (Programa de Cálculo do Desflorestamento da Amazônia). Os resultados indicam que a maior perda de Bioma Amazônia é verificada nos Estados de Mato Grosso e Tocantins, com 48,95 e 59,12%, respectivamente. Os Estados do Amapá e do Amazonas, por sua vez, são os que apresentaram menores taxas médias de desmatamento, considerando desde 1978 até 2009, com 1,41 e 2,14%, respectivamente.

The present work aimed to study the deforested areas in the Amazon biome, analyzing the causes of deforestation occurred in the Brazilian states of the so called ‘Amazonia Legal’ until 2009. Two methods were used in order to assess the deforestation. The first evaluation was accomplished through the premise of (Brasil, 2008), which considers that the deforestation in the Amazon biome was of approximately 300,000 km2 in 1977. The second assessment was performed between 1978 and 2009, using the PRODES (Program for Calculation of Deforestation in the Amazon) system methodology. The results indicated that the greatest loss of the Amazon biome has occurred in the states of ‘Mato Grosso’ and ‘Tocantins’, with 48.95 and 59.12% respectively. The states of ‘Amapa’ and ‘Amazonas’ are among the least deforested ones between 1978 and 2009, considering the average deforestation rate, with 1.41 and 2.14%, respectively.
