Este estudo teve por objetivo determinar critérios e parâmetros para o inventário e a classificação das formações secundárias do litoral catarinense e mostrar que a legislação que regulamenta o uso destas formações é inconsistente com relação à classificação, embora esta seja o seu principal alicerce. Propõe-se que os inventários para fins de classificação incluam todos os indivíduos da parcela que tenham 5 cm ou mais de DAP e que a Área Basal seja a única variável utilizada para a classificação da formação vegetal em estádios sucessionais. Ficou também evidente a possibilidade de uma classificação simplesmente baseada na fitofisionomia da formação.

This study aimed to determine criteria and parameters to inventory and classification the secondary forest of the Atlantic coast of Santa Catarina State, Brazil, to show that the regulations on forest use is inconsistent in relation to this classification, although this is its main guide. We propose that inventories aiming classifying secondary forests should include all individuals of each plot with 5cm of DBH or over and that Basal Area should be the only variable used to classify these forest formation into successional stages. This study suggests also that a classification of a secondary forest can de done based exclusively in its physiognomy.
